Once you've addressed this, the answer is of course simple. That said, I smash just about everything smashable in Demon's Souls because I expect to be rewarded for breaking shit with undamaged goods. Perhaps the best example is punching a trash can in Streets of Rage and receiving a turkey dinner. That joke however I'm sure has been done to death, hopefully we've shed some new light on this phenomenon.
